Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't answered below, please email us at info@squawksquad.co.nz

What/where are the "Extra resources"?

For each topic, we have split the 'recommended lesson plans' into three age groups - lower (Yr 1-2), mid (Yr 3-5) and upper (Yr 6-8). These lesson plans are hand-crafted/selected by Squawk Squad as we think they are the best lesson plan that you could follow to achieve the best learning outcomes. They are also aimed to keep the in-class learning time to max 60-90mins in order to fit into your busy classroom schedule!

However, we have also provided a bunch of awesome extra resources for each topic, that you can also access and use within your classroom. NB - the 'Extra Resources' documents are not split into the various year levels, but instead are simply bunched together for you to review and decide what's appropriate for your classroom to use. Access these extra lesson plans via the "Extra Resources" buttons on each topic.

For additional lesson ideas, also feel free to check out the other year levels 'recommend lesson plans' too - as not all of these have been copied across in the "Extra Resources".

Finally, if you find some more cool lesson ideas/websites etc, please let us know/add them to the shared Google Drive folder that's been set up for this purpose! (That way other teachers can enjoy what you've found too)

Are the webinars recorded?

Yes, all webinars are recorded and uploaded to the webinar page that you can access from your dashboard or via the link below.

Are there any Te Reo links or resources available?

UPDATE 04 August 2020 - yes! We're extremely very grateful to Hinga Smith and Matetu Herewini for contributing Mātauranga Māori lesson resources to the various topics. See Topic 2's resources for an idea on what these will look like, and we'll be updating the later topics over the coming weeks. These resources are aimed at English-medium schools, to encourage teachers to have confidence in incorporating Te Ao Māori into their schooling. If you do wish to use these, please spend some time reviewing them prior to class, as some are set at a standard that may be too hard for younger classrooms. (We've done our best with the limited resources/time we could put into preparing these for you -hopefully they give you some ideas and motivation!)

Background:
Earlier this year we ran hui with teachers nationwide to find out what some of their greatest needs were, and one of the biggest themes that came back to us was the desire for teachers to better understand and incorporate Te Ao Māori/Mātauranga Māori into environmental education (and thus within Squawk Squad). Through both internal desire, and off the back of these hui, we intend in our future state to co-design our programmes with iwi from the start - to ensure they are fully centered around Te Ao Māori/Mātauranga Māori - this is a journey we're excited to take. For this programme we're very grateful to have had input from Hinga Smith and Matetu Herewini who have helped to put together a variety of resources focused on Mātauranga Māori that are relevant to the programme - this is the first step towards the future vision of centering our mahi around Te Ao Māori.
