Topic 8: Wicked Waste

Thank you! Your submission has been received!
Oops! Something went wrong while submitting the form.

Humans produce waste and we have to manage the impact that this has on the planet. This topic will help students consider their waste streams and find lower waste alternatives.

Whether you choose to complete our ‘rot or not’ waste burial activity, or complete a waste audit with your class, they’ll be sure to have a bunch of fun and learn a heap along the way!

Core objective:

Humans produce waste – we have to manage the impact this is having on our planet

Mātauranga Māori: We didn't have capacity to create a Squawk Squad resource for this topic but we highly recommend Pare Kore for resources and ideas! 🙂

Call-to-Action: Pick up one piece of rubbish each day all week and make a trash sculpture!

Years 1 - 2

Core Objective:

Understand that waste is a growing challenge, but one we can help deal with by making personal choices.

Lesson summary:

In this week's suggested lesson plan students are introduced to the scientific method by creating a hypothesis of which waste materials will break down after 4-6 weeks in the soil. These materials can be buried now, and then students can get their hands dirty digging them up during Term 4 to analyze the results! They then consider how this relates to landfills and the concept of kaitiakitanga. Following this, students can visualize the scale of the average kiwi’s waste, by mapping out how much space the waste of their class would take up over a year.

Topic Call-to-Action:

Pick up one piece of rubbish each day all week and make a trash sculpture!

Lesson summary:

In this week's suggested lesson plan students visualize the scale of the average kiwi’s waste, by mapping out how much space the waste of their class would take up over a year. The class then takes part in a waste audit, to help them better understand what their classroom waste is made up of, and what steps they can take to reduce this.
